David J. Gasper, DVM, PhD is veterinary anatomic pathologist and immunologist with residency training and professional experience in the diagnostic pathology of zoo & wildlife diseases. Dr. Gasper is the owner of Pacific Zoo & Wildlife Diagnostics, and Chief of Exotic Companion Animal, Zoo Animal and Wildlife Pathology at Animal Reference Pathology (ARP), LLC. Marine mammal, avian wildlife, and elasmobrach pathology account for approximately 2/3 of his practice, with the remainder composed of a variety of exotic companion animals and non-human primates.
Dr. Gasper’s diagnostic pathology interests include respiratory diseases of avian and mammalian speices, viral diseases of reptiles and amphibians, and general pathology of marine and aquatic species. His research focuses on antiviral T-cell immunology, T-cell vaccinology, and animal models of respiratory virus infection. His goal is to support global conservation efforts by using classical anatomic pathology, flow cytometry, and molecular immunology to understand how threats such as loss of genetic diversity, habitat, and food sources affect immunity and disease susceptibility in endangered species.
